"Part of life on the Eastern coast of the Coromandel Peninsula invariably invokes a trip to Whitianga for supplies, a trip into town. If you are lucky it’s achieved via a trip on the ferry (even with the dog in tow for the vet if need be) and will always remain a treat. Over the years those ferries have changed as has the wharf and even the ferry landing itself.
Although they are now much older like me, the more original of the Whitianga fishing fleet remains the same, as do their moorings.
Marina, Rod, Denise-G, Renown is the old-School core, with the flamboyant Jasmine as a relatively new edition. Like trinkets amongst the sparkle on a Christmas tree, the boats in the estuary entertain those who watch, as they fidget and strain against their tethers with the ebb and flow of the tides.
A constant within a changing world. Oddly reassuring that not everything that was, has now been lost." - Souzie Speerstra.
