"If this painting resembles a crucifixion instead of a glimpse of a Bonnard-like intimate moment, so be it.
I’ve always enjoyed the way breasts float like islands in the bath. Where I got into trouble for this painting was the accurate rendering of the reflection of a small window. Until that time Bonnard wasn’t too far away. But suddenly there was a slicing of flesh. I had two options. To leave it alone and recognise the horror of St Agatha’s martyrdom, torture and death, or grow little palm trees around the nipples. But there’s no going back once the subconscious has spoken."
