In the present day, Richard Chrisp resides on the picturesque Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand, where he has chosen to make his home for an extended period. His art is characterized by the influence of his time in Europe and his unique fusion of artistic styles.
Chrisp's work has been likened to artists David Jones, Matisse, Raoul Dufy and Cezanne, showcasing an energetic personality evident in his interior, landscape and floral paintings.
Richard has had a long-time enjoyment of beauty, colour and gardening, including flower species, courtyards and rambling gardens. His love of flowers and nature often resonate in his floral and boutique garden paintings.
The most common meanings for Bearded Iris include hope, wisdom, trust and valour, making it a great flower to have around the house.
The iris was originally cultivated in 1749 BC, after King Thutmose III conquered Syria. This land was covered in irises. The name "iris" means 'rainbow' in Greek, which is fitting for a flower that comes in so many colours!
Irises were said to represent the messenger of the gods in Greek Mythology, Iris
