Whitianga Event March 2022 Michael Duncan Smither CNZM
Sat 5th & Sun 6th Sat 12th & Sun 13th 10am- 4pm
showcasing
Michael Duncan Smither, born 1939, a prominent and pivotal painter, emerging in the 1960's to lead contemporary New Zealand art in new directions.
Whether Smither expresses his observations through paintings, screen prints, sculptures, drawings, or music compositions, every art piece reveals, with clarity, his unique recognition of our everyday, and of his everyday observations.
Yet the range of his subject of study is very extensive. In this way we are, or some of us are, able to say "Oh, there’s a Smither landscape", or "oh, look at that Smither cloud". With typical dedication to his everyday studies, Smither is guiding our unique cultural awareness forward, by securing it firmly amongst New Zealand contemporary art and in doing so, recording it historically for years to come.
Awarded in 2004 the CNZM for services to the arts and is the Mercury Bay Art Escape Patron Artist.
