About the artwork
A calligraphic from the collection Light Through the Trees. Michael explores his environment and uses pohutukawa trees as subjects of calligraphic works and oil paintings. During his long and prolific career Michael Smither has found continuing inspiration in his immediate environment. This has resulted in a large body of work that is synonymous with the New Zealand landscape and culture.
2017 film Episode 8 by City Associate films - Michael Smither; The Next Ten Years. Light through the Trees references Michael's environmental interest of his coastline and the development through a series of oil paintings and calligraphic's as he studies the eastern pohutukawa tree, near his home at Otama Beach on the Coromandel Peninsula.
